A discovery tour of Assyrtiko and other great wines from Santorini

If there's one grape variety from Greece that people outside of the country have usually heard of, it's Assyrtiko. This tasting will put the spotlight on Assyrtikos and other unique grapes and wines from Santorini and show you why everyone is talking about them.

We will taste at least eight wines, mostly white wines--white grapes account for about 95% of the wine production on the island, and 75% of the plantings are Assyrtiko--but also at least one excellent red. We'll also taste an iconic dessert wine, Vinsanto--not to be confused with the Italian wine of the same name. We'll sample world-class wines from several producers including Argyros Estate, Volcanic Slopes Vineyards and Mikra Thira, a small winery on the "other" Santorini -- the island of Thirassia across the caldera from the main island.

As usual, all the wines will be paired with plenty of good Greek food.

The wines will be presented by Petros Fotopoulos, the agronomist and oenologist who has animated attendees at my previous Greek wine tastings at TapaSoif with both his passion and his depth of knowledge.

The tasting costs 80 euros, a little more than usual because wines from Santorini tend to be a little expensive. Participation is limited to the first 30 people who sign up. Don't wait too long! This tasting is likely to fill up fast!
