Maine Family Stories: Burtons & Larrabees in Brunswick

June Vail came to Maine in 1970, taught for a year at Brunswick High School, and then founded the dance program at Bowdoin College and later chaired the department of Theater and Dance.

She has deep family roots here in Brunswick through the Larrabee–Burton line, and in 2017 published a biography of her great-grandmother, Gertrude Hitz Burton, titled "The Passion of Perfection." In 2023 she published Folly Cove Sketches, a memoir of living in Gloucester, Massachusetts as a teenager with her great aunt Virginia Lee Burton, author and illustrator of the iconic children’s books "The Little House" and "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel."
