About the event

The Edge of Form - Butoh for Somatic Integration
The Edge of Form -
Butoh for Somatic Integration

Led by Alexandra Wynne of iLiminal Butoh Collective

May 31- June 1 2025
10:30am -5:30pm
Northern Rivers, NSW Australia

A workshop for those drawn to dance as a way of listening to the body, to nature, and what lives beneath the surface of awareness. This is a chance to explore the varied terrain that lies between form and formlessness, where weight flows like water, and bones remember softness.

Rooted in the practices of Butoh, Noguchi Taiso, and somatic inquiry, this workshop opens a dialogue with the body’s innate intelligence. Through deep listening, imagery, and guided improvisation, we enter the body as a site of memory and mystery, a space where hidden layers begin to speak.

Participants will gain practical tools and embodied experience in somatic research, improvisation, and composition, learning to cultivate attunement to the physical and subtle bodies.

This experience invites you to meet the body not as an object to shape, but as a living process, responsive, poetic, and in continuous metamorphosis.

Through this workshop you’ll be invited to:

• Awaken the body’s innate intelligence through Butoh-inspired practices that soften tension and invite fluid, organic motion, echoing nature’s cycles of birth, decay, and renewal

* Explore sensory perception: the feeling of space, the textures of touch, and the subtle impulses that move through us.

* Enter states of no-mind, where the subconscious body can speak and creativity emerges without force.

* Develop physical sensitivity and coordination through grounding exercises that work with gravity, spirals, and natural weight flow

* Cultivate a relationship with breath and meditation in motion, where movement arises from spaciousness rather than effort.

Who is it for?
Butoh training offers valuable tools for dancers, theatre-makers, performers, and anyone seeking to deepen their connection to movement, presence, and poetic embodiment.

This workshop is accessible to all levels, beginner to experienced. No prior experience is needed, only a willingness to listen and be moved.

About the facilitator

Alexandra Wynne is a nomadic performance artist and movement facilitator from Australia, dedicated to exploring the depths of human experience through Butoh. With a background in physical theatre and a three-year period of study and facilitation at the Subbody Butoh School in Dharamshala, India, her work weaves together influences such as Noguchi Taiso, natural movement, embodied awareness, and holistic practices that bridge body and mind.

Since 2011, Alexandra has traveled extensively across the globe, immersing herself in embodied research, performing, teaching, and curating artistic gatherings. She has studied closely with Butoh masters in Japan and Europe, while also sharing her work in diverse communities worldwide. Her practice invites participants into deep presence and transformation, cultivating authentic expression and a subtle sensitivity to the body’s inner landscapes and subconscious terrain

Meet your Hosts

iLiminal Butoh Collective is an international group of artists exploring perception, transformation, and the subconscious through the raw poetry of Butoh. Rooted in deep listening and personal inquiry, their work blurs the boundaries between performance and ritual, inviting both audience and participant into a space of collective metamorphosis.

Through workshops, residencies, and immersive performances, the collective delves into themes of impermanence, relational tension, and embodied memory. Their approach is intuitive, inclusive and experimental, drawing from individual lineages and shared research to create evocative, dreamlike experiences that awaken the senses and speak to the hidden language of the body
