SMT Global Interculturalism and Musical Peripheries Interest Group Annual Meeting
Call for Lightning Talks: Interculturalism in Brazilian Music
Dear Colleagues,
The Global Interculturalism and Music Peripheries Interest Group (SMT) is inviting proposals for its meeting at the 2025 AMS/SMT Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota (November 6-9) on music in Brazil.
Brazil is a country divided into regions with overlapping musical histories, interests, and challenges. Elements of Indigenous, African and European musics are synthesized in a constantly expanding variety of new forms. The large population, geographic size, and ethnic diversity have contributed to a distinctive musical culture influential throughout the world, especially among Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) musicians and audiences.
We invite proposals for presentations in a 12-minute short format.
Thematic areas may include—but are not limited to—the following:
• Music Theory: Inheritance and Perspectives
• Reception and Impact of European and North American music theories in Brazil
• Selected Brazilian works reflecting local political influences
• African musical retentions in Brazilian music
• Combination of Indigenous, African and European elements in Brazilian music
• Impact of Brazilian thinking and musical languages in other regions of the world
• Consideration of the political-social context at large in analyses of Brazilian works
• Topics, narrativity, and intertextuality in Brazilian music
• Music theory pedagogy in Brazil
• Theory and analysis of nationalistic repertoires or Brazilian popular music
The session will feature five 12-minute short presentations followed by a 20-minute discussion during which the audience may ask questions of any of the panelists.
