The community is invited to join Justin Hager, the official caretaker of the Fujita sword, for an open demonstration of the proper maintenance of this priceless historical artifact. The sword was presented to the citizens of Brookings as a gift of peace and friendship in 1962, twenty years after Nobuo Fujita bombed the forest outside of Brookings on September 9, 1942. The sword now resides full-time at the Chetco Library.
Justin's Iaido students will also be in attendance to observe and learn traditional techniques for proper katana care and maintenance.
Following the cleaning of the sword, Justin will discuss the cultural and historical significance of the sword and take questions from students and audience members.
