There are many songs and tunes featuring birds in the Gaelic tradition from Bràigh Rusgaich to Skylark’s Ascension. Join Màiri MacMillan, Alana MacInnes, Gillebrìde MacMillan, Padruig Moireasdan and Shona Mhoireasdan for an evening of tunes, songs and good craic all on the theme of birds!

Artists Biographies

Màiri MacMillan from South Uist is a Gàidhlig singer and recently released her second album of self composed Gaelic songs Glaschu – Songs to a City. She has performed across Scotland and Ireland and Canada. In addition to singing Mairi teaches Gàidhlig language and Gàidhlig song.

Gillebride MacMillan is a Gaelic singer and teacher who has released four albums of newly composed and traditional songs. Gillebrìde stars as Gwyllyn the Bard in Starz Outlander where he regales those in Castle Leoch with traditional Gaelic songs and tales. In Starz Outlander, Gillebrìde sings traditional songs and a song specially composed by Bear McCreary.

Alana MacInnes is a prominent Scottish piper and traditional musician hailing from South Uist. She has become a well-known performer and teacher in the traditional music scene. In addition to performing, Alana is also a talented writer and editor. She edited and wrote music for Young Uist Voices, a series that features recorded voice memos from young residents living and working across the islands between Eriskay and Berneray. She has also edited the stories on the Uist Beò website.

Pàdruig Morrison is a musician and composer from Grimsay, Uist. He recently completed his PhD studies in Composition looking at traditional influences in Scottish contemporary music. He performs with Beinn Lee, and was a 2020 BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year Finalist, as writing music for the Hebrides Ensemble, Red Note Ensemble, and with members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He is also a crofter and does part-time heritage and oral history work on Grimsay.

Shona Morrison is from Kingsburgh on the Isle of Skye and has been involved in traditional music from a young age, playing fiddle and piano. She is a member of the band Teud, who have played at festivals and gigs across Scotland. Shona works as Gaelic officer at Ceòlas.
