“Your journey to love begins…”
Helen, Clytemnestra, Penelope, Medea, and Cassandra. Women and companions of ancient heroes. While the men led states, nations, and wars and collected victorious laurels, they silently stood by their side, waiting for their chance. Today they face off in an ancient agōn to determine which one will claim the ultimate triumph, the olive branch, and perhaps even the heart of Heracles, the greatest of heroes.
But who are these women, about whom Homer wrote little and myth collectors spared only a few lines? Wives, lovers, mothers, daughters, sisters, servants, but also seers, witches, seductresses, murderesses, or “tradwives.” Idealized archetypes, or complex beings with their own opinions, desires, emotions, and struggles?
Ancient tragedy transforms into a reality show. Why did they enter Agonia, what are they fighting for, and what do they expect from victory? How much do these heroines have in common with today’s Helens, Clytemnestras, Penelopes, Medeas, and Cassandras? A struggle for power and visibility, for voice and rose, or a desperate fight for sovereignty? But isn’t Agonia in fact only a trap set by patriarchy? A woman’s life as an emancipatory race to escape the myth of gender.
Agony (Ancient Reality Show) is an original stage production about the identity of contemporary women. Where does external pressure end and the inner one begin? The past meets the present in the fight for equality and fair conditions for everyone, in every era. Can our myths be healed?
