Degenerate posturing. The Sophs’ frontman Ethan Ramon knows what he’s singing is wrong — but that’s the point. “Sometimes it's important to write from the perspective of the worst part of yourself so that version of yourself can live through the music,” he said.

That brutal honesty, paired with their broad, genre-spanning sound, caught the attention of Rough Trade founders Geoff Travis and Jeannette Lee, who quickly signed on after hearing their demo reel. The Sophs — Ramon, Sam Yuh (keyboards), Austin Parker Jones (electric guitar), Seth Smades (acoustic guitar), Devin Russ (drums), and Cole Bobbitt (bass) — now arrive with their debut album GOLDSTAR (out soon).

At any moment, The Sophs can leap from pop-punk to funk to Delta blues to ZZ Top-inspired rock. Their songs are wild collisions of vaudeville, emo bluegrass, grunge, and flamenco-tinged folk, often shifting direction without warning. What ties it all together is Ramon’s versatile, chameleonic voice and the band’s explosive energy — equal parts chaotic, joyful, and unstoppable.

Yesterday’s Girl is a “captivating” (Sofar Sounds) five-piece act blending indie rock, alt-pop and new wave genres with playful storytelling. Taking inspiration from Blondie and Talking Heads, the Bristol natives and adoptees combine eighties style with a seventies sensibility that is best experienced up close and personal.

Cutting their teeth on Bristol’s thriving music scene, they’ve secured billing at prominent venues and festivals since November 2024. Pulling in crowds at D2D Festival, Valley Fest, and at Sofar Sounds latest stop at Bristol Old Vic, they’re ones to watch.

Join them at the Lanes on the 1st of September off the back of recording their debut record as they amp up to play their biggest gig to date at Thekla later in the autumn.
