Midsummer is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies. Theseus, Duke of Athens, is preparing to marry Hippolyta. They are interrupted by Egeus, whose daughter, Hermia, refuses to marry Demetrius, her father’s choice, because she is in love with Lysander. Hermia and Lysander flee to the forest to escape the unwanted marriage, pursued by Demetrius, who loves Hermia, and Helena, who loves Demetrius. In the forest, Oberon, the king of the fairies, is quarreling with his queen, Titania. He overhears Helena and Demetrius arguing and sends his servant, Puck, to use a love potion on both Titania and Demetrius. Puck accidentally uses it on Lysander, who instantly falls in love with Helena. Mayhem ensues between the four lovers. Meanwhile, a group of tradesmen are preparing a play for the Duke’s wedding. Puck, out of mischief, turns the lead actor into an ass, and Titania, seeing him immediately after also receiving the love potion, falls in love with him. Eventually, all is restored, and the tradesmen perform their play at the wedding feast.
The show is directed by Annette Kaczanowski, assisted by John Shoup.
