THE NEW GENERATION OF JAZZ presents The Joe Rutledge Sextet
The theme of the night is a journey through the golden era of jazz, celebrating the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Art Blakey and Ahmad Jamal. These tunes were born in a time when jazz was exploding with new ideas - hard bop grooves, modal explorations, and small group interplay that defined a generation of sound.
As a drummer, Joe Rutledge draws inspiration from masters like Philly Joe Jones, Bill Stewart, Vernel Fournier and Tony Williams, whose balance of swing, touch, and fire continue to inspire and shape his playing. Leading the sextet, he brings together Alyssa Sinclair - trumpet, Mason Harvey - tenor saxophone, Chris James - alto saxophone, Baxter Birrell - piano and Issac Worland - bass to reimagine this music with the energy and creativity of a new generation.
Together they’ll deliver swinging hard bop, high-energy tunes and plenty of fiery improvisation. Expect tight grooves, big sounds and a fun, dynamic night of jazz at the BJC.
