What you learn on the course:

Self-regulation has become an important area of interest with an emerging understanding of its contribution to children becoming positive learners, as well as supporting their long-term mental health.

Self-regulation is vital for emotional well-being. It helps to transition between tasks without fear or confusion. It inhibits impulses. Self-regulation helps children to cope with frustration, delay or distractions. Self-regulation is not a skill that children can develop by themselves. Self-regulation develops through relationships with attuned adults who are tuned in to their needs, personalities, what makes them tick.

This course will provide strategies for helping children to regulate their own emotions and behaviour. It will help practitioners understand the impact self-regulation can have on a child’s development and well-being.

Key Topics/Outcomes:

Describe the developing brain and the impact of stress
Define what self-regulation is and how children develop the key skills needed for self-regulation
Explore research in relation to self-regulation
Assess national guidance for links to supporting and developing self-regulation
Explain how attachment supports children’s self-regulation skills
Identify strategies for scaffolding children’s self-regulation.
