We are excited to present a talk by Author and Historian, Phil Mathison. Phil coined the term “Tolkien Triangle” to describe East Yorkshire, where J.R.R. Tolkien spent time convalescing in 1917–18. This area — roughly Hull, Hornsea, and Kilnsea — is believed to have influenced his later works, especially The Lord of the Rings. Phil’s book, Tolkien in East Yorkshire 1917–1918: An Illustrated Tour, explores these key locations.
More recently, Phil helped bring to life two stunning sculptures in the village of Roos, crafted by Lincolnshire artist Allen Stichler. One depicts a young Tolkien, the other shows Tolkien's wife, Edith dancing in the woods — both carved from a single piece of oak, celebrating their enduring bond and the landscape that inspired Tolkien’s imagination.
Presented as part of the family event BRIDLINGTON COMIC CON 2025, the talk will last around an hour and Phil will be available to answer questions and chat throughout the day.
