Bang-Shyuan Chen, a Taiwanese pianist, has been featured in prominent concert series such as the Penney Memorial Church Commemorative Programs Series (Penney Farms, FL), the Village Concert Series (Mount Pleasant, SC), the Ilse Newell Concert Series (Apalachicola, FL), Lives of the Piano series hosted by Dr. Lisa Yui (New York), the WQXR webcast series with David Dubal (New York), and the Stars of Tiding series presented by the O-Bank Educational Foundation (Taipei). Most recently, he toured throughout the southeastern United States with the Astralis Ensemble, performed Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A major, K. 488 with the Florida State University Symphony Chamber Orchestra, and appeared at the Living Arts Centre in a widely attended Christmas concert with the Mississauga Festival Choir.
A dedicated educator, Chen has extensive collegiate teaching experience encompassing individual piano lessons, piano literature classes, and group piano classes. He served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the Florida State University College of Music and as an Associate Instructor at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. His recently published doctoral treatise offers analytical perspectives on the works of living Soviet-era composers Mikhail Kollontay and Valery Arzoumanov, accompanied by performance recordings available on SoundCloud.
Chen received a merit-based scholarship for his Bachelor of Music degree at the Manhattan School of Music, and later earned full-tuition awards and stipends for his graduate studies at Indiana University and Florida State University, where he completed his Master of Music and Doctor of Music degrees, respectively.
His distinctions include winning the 2024 Doctoral Concerto Competition at Florida State University, the 2023 Rockwood Piano Competition, and the 2023 Annual Competitive Festival for Pianists at Florida State University, as well as receiving an Honorable Mention at the 2016 NTD International Piano Competition. He was also a recipient of the Charles & Persis Rockwood Scholarship (2021-2024) and the Tallahassee Music Guild Scholarship (2022).
Chen has studied with distinguished pedagogues including Professor Mikhail Kollontay, Dr. Marc Silverman, Dr. Karen Shaw, Distinguished Professor Menahem Pressler, and Dr. Read Gainsford.
Chen is currently based in the Greater Toronto Area, serving as resident pianist and organist at Eden United Church of Mississauga, Ontario.
