River Memories: Exploring Settlement Patterns on Waterways in Vermont

Devastating recent rain events, including in July 2023 and 2024 and Tropical Storm Irene in 2011, have demonstrated that many communities in Vermont are vulnerable to damage from flooding. Historian Alan Berolzheimer examines how the development of settlement patterns over time have contributed to the problem of flooding in Vermont.

A collaboration between the OV Community Engagement Lab and the Vermont Humanities Council.

This presentation is inspired by The Light Pirate, this years Vermont Humanities Community Read selection, which follows a young girl named Wanda as she grows up in a rapidly changing coastal Florida shaped by rising seas and extreme weather, and explores themes of resilience, human connection, and adaptation.
