A Service of Word based on Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16

For many people, faith simply means agreeing to a set of ideas. God created the world, Jesus is the Son of God, and so on. But is that all there is to faith? The authour of Hebrews begins this section by affirming that faith is important for followers of Jesus, and goes on to recount how it was important to Abraham and Sarah. Indeed, part of our faith is that God is in charge. How did faith lead Abraham and Sarah through incredible situations? And what does faith mean for us today?

How does power-with depict God’s love better than power-over?

How does your belief in God lead you to participate in the world?

Do you find yourself relying more on power-over or power-with? Why?

Challenge

Reflect on the times that love has been the better response in bad times.
