The perfect activity for people who like to put things together, From Leaf to Branch will community members to begin arranging and affixing groups of leaves together to create arrangements that begin to mimic leaves on a branch. Experimenting with different approaches to shaping, stitching, taping, and gluing, participants will help to form constructions that will help inform the overall shape and size of the paper canopy to be installed in the Library.
This workshop is the third in a series hosted by BWG Public Library's Artist in Residence, Jill Price. Through four workshops, Price will work with BWG community members to co-create elements of We Are Forest, an interactive installation that explores human interconnections with trees.
Dr. Jill Price is an award winning interdisciplinary Canadian artist, curator, educator, and writer of German, Welsh, Scottish, and Ukrainian descent. Grateful to be living and working on the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe peoples in Barrie, Ontario, Price earned her BFA and BEd from Western University, completed an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art Media & Design at OCAD University in Toronto, and most recently earned a PhD in Cultural Studies at Queen's University. Her SSHRC‑funded Research‑Creation thesis From Unsettling to UN/making investigated how artists and their institutions can help to usher in an ethics of care and repair for human and more-than-human ecologies. Currently on exhibit at the MacLaren Art Centre with an installation entitled From There to Here: Walking for Tomorrow, Price works as the Assistant Curator and Collections Manager with ART@RVH at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie and continues to independently curate projects with an ecological focus.
As Artist in Residence at the BWG Public Library, Dr. Price will engage community members in an exploration of the deep connections between humans and trees, drawing a poetic parallel between book pages and tree leaves. Her installation will transform recycled paper from outdated books into a suspended canopy of hand-cut leaves, created with the help of community members. Participants will learn to paint with natural dyes, make prints from collected leaves, and assemble layered foliage that echoes the beauty of a living forest. The completed work will hang above an antique writing desk, offering a tranquil space to read, write on seed paper, or immerse yourself in a soundscape of local forest sounds.
