Description: A special tour for school kids will start the day, with a gopher tortoise demonstration. Work day activities will continue throughout the day.
Work on a 7-acre sand pine scrub preserve. We’ll be doing mostly hand pulling and digging, then herbicide work after 11:30 am, when the students are off the site. The more the merrier! Target species: Sansevieria/ snake plant, Ganges primrose (Asystasia gangetica), Kalanchoe, Natal and Guinea grass, rosary pea, and flame vine (Pyrostegia venusta), also some Surinam cherry, shoebutton Ardisia, Caesar’s W**d. See and learn about some new non-natives moving in like one-seeded false buttonweed (Borreria diacrodonta) and Chinese box-orange (Atalantia buxifolia).
Bring hand tools like shovel, hand clippers, machete; quart sized bottles for herbicide, backpack sprayer (if you have one and if staying for the afternoon). Other items that may be helpful: loppers, hard rake and W**d wacker. Caution – cacti and stinging nettle are present in some areas.
A few pair of W**d Wrangle gloves (different sizes, too) will be available for early attendees, but bring your own gloves, too, and a refillable water bottle.
