About the event

2025 Queer Ancestor Memorial: Mildred J. Berryman
Join the Mildred Berryman Institute for our Fourth Queer Ancestor Memorial, as we gather to honor our namesake, Mildred Jessie Berryman (1901–1972)—a pioneering voice in Utah’s queer history. Since 2022, local LGBTIQ+ historians have gathered in a local cemetery to honor an LGBTIQ+ Utahn of the past. We honor and remember them with spoken word, music, thought, flowers, and—of course-rainbows.

This year’s memorial will be held at Mildred Berryman’s gravesite and will include music, singing, poetry, a short lecture, and a community ceremony of remembrance. Together, we will lay flowers and offerings on Mildred’s grave, honoring her courage and legacy while celebrating the lives and stories that continue to shape our community.

This memorial is a moment to reflect, to connect, and to pay tribute to those who came before us. We invite you to stand with us in gratitude and remembrance.

📍 LOCATION INFO: Mildred’s grave is in the north west most corner of the cemetery, near the intersection of Poplar and Maple street. Look for a white pop-up tent and people gathering. A picture of the map of the cemetery where we will be meeting has been posted in this event.

Bring your own chair & sun/rain protection!

About Mildred Berryman:

Mildred Jessie Berryman (1901–1972) was a pioneering figure in Utah’s queer history. In the 1920s, she conducted one of the first known studies of lesbian and gay life in the United States, documenting the experiences of women and men in Salt Lake City. Though never published in her lifetime, her work stands as an extraordinary act of courage and curiosity, offering a rare glimpse into queer community during an era of deep silence and stigma. Today, the Mildred Berryman Institute carries her name in honor of her vision, resilience, and lasting contribution to LGBTQIA+ history. We recommend Connell O’Donovan’s lecture on Mildred, available on YouTube here:
