The Jazz Composers Alliance was founded in 1985, and the JCA Orchestra has been performing new music ever since—driven by a mission to keep the music moving forward and never stand still. The ensemble and its resident composers blend improvisation and composition in fresh, distinctive ways, drawing on a wide range of stylistic influences.
The JCA Orchestra has released 12 albums and collaborated with an illustrious lineup of guest composer-performers, including Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, Maria Schneider, and Dave Holland. The resident composers—David Harris, Darrell Katz, Bob Pilkington, and Mimi Rabson—are joined by some of Boston’s finest improvisers in this dynamic 21-piece group.
“The compositions themselves are the stars of this program, brought to life in a live-performance context featuring several remarkably inventive instrumental solos.”
