About the artists
Explosive and wistful, sinonó draws on Latin American folk and free improvisation to create a space of crackling aliveness. Described as “middle-of-the-night music” (Dada Strain), the trio features vocalist and composer isabel crespo pardo, cellist Lester St. Louis, and bassist Henry Fraser. Together, they perform crespo's "poemsongs" - pieces built around metaphor and improvisation that shift in performance, but always remain tied to poetry and breath. sinonó has performed at venues such as Roulette Intermedium, The DiMenna Center, and Lincoln Center Atrium. Their debut album la espalda y su punto radiante (Subtext Recordings) released in Spring 2024. They will record their sophomore album this Fall at Pioneer Works (Brooklyn, NY).
Katie Porter is a clarinetist and curator specializing in experimental music. Passionate about creating musical communities, she co-founded the venue Listen/Space (Brooklyn) and curates the Listen/Space Commissions, responsible for 46 new works for mixed chamber group. She also co-directs the biennial VU Symposium for experimental, improvised and electronic music (Park City, Utah) and is working on a giant multi-year project of experimental works for solo clarinet at Nancy Holt’s Sun Tunnels, a land artwork in remote northern Utah. She currently lives in New York City.
Porter will perform the US premiere of Phase to Phase for two bass clarinets with a special guest from Argentina by way of Berlin. Phase to Phase was released on the Japanese label FTARRI. Composer Sky Macklay wrote of the release in I Care If You Listen, "A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending an intimate house show in Berlin, which served as the album-release event for Phase to Phase, a gorgeous work by bass clarinetists and co-composers Katie Porter and LC. Hearing Katie and LC play together live, sitting close to them and feeling their vibrations was so comforting and luxurious, and their love for and tender treatment of each gentle sound and multiphonic permeates the album."
