Lecture & Lunch - A Divine Collaboration: Mucha and Bernhardt

Artist Alphonse Mucha and actress Sarah Bernhardt transformed the streets of Paris into a stage through a six-year creative partnership. This collaboration utilized Art Nouveau posters to elevate Bernhardt to global stardom while fundamentally changing how theaters reached the public. Raphaël Chatroux leads a discussion on how these iconic works brought art into daily Parisian life and blurred the boundaries between fine art and advertising. These images effectively turned city walls into an early form of modern street art and defined the character of public space at the dawn of the 20th century.

About the Speaker

Raphaël Chatroux serves as the Head of the Modern and Impressionist Art department for Freeman’s | Hindman. Since joining the firm in 2016, he received the Samuel M. Freeman II Fellowship and developed broad expertise in American and European art. Chatroux has led landmark sales and set auction records for artists such as Albert York, Emma Fordyce McRae, and Bo Bartlett. He has played a key role in museum acquisitions by the Musée Marmottan Monet and the Neue Galerie. A native of France, Chatroux previously worked with the Palace of Versailles and holds a master’s degree in art law.
