About the event

2025 Historic Bluffton Foundation Tour of Homes
Step inside the charm & history of Bluffton! A rare opportunity to explore seven exquisite historic structures & the Heyward House Museum.

About this Event

The Historic Bluffton Foundation welcomes you to our Tour of Homes, featuring seven exceptional residences and the Heyward House, all located in the Bluffton Historic District. Tour check-in will be at the historic Heyward House, one of Bluffton’s treasured landmarks. Delicious Southern fare will be available for purchase at the Heyward House during the Tour.

The homes have been selected for their historic significance, their connection to the community, and their role in shaping the future of Bluffton. Knowledgeable docents will guide guests through each home, sharing historical context and unique anecdotes.

As you explore our charming town, take a stroll down Calhoun Street to the banks of the May River - the heart of Bluffton. One of our most iconic natural landmarks, the river is known for its rich ecosystem, including oysters, blue crabs, shrimp, and many species of fish. It played a significant role in the town’s development and economy and remains a vital natural resource today. Along the riverbank, you’ll find Wright Family Park, the Squire Pope Carriage House, and The Church of the Cross.

Bluffton is steeped in history. While you're here, be sure to stop by the Town of Bluffton Welcome Center, located in the newly restored Squire Pope Carriage House at 111 Calhoun Street. Built in 1850, this two-story structure has stood the test of time, surviving the 1863 “Burning of Bluffton” during the Civil War. In 2017, the property was acquired by the Town of Bluffton, Beaufort County, and its Rural and Critical Land Preservation Program. The rehabilitation of the Carriage House marked the final phase of the Wright Family Park development, which opened in late 2020.

The Church of the Cross, located at the end of Calhoun Street on the bluff overlooking the May River, is perhaps Bluffton’s most recognizable landmark. Designed by Charleston architect Edward Brickell White, construction began in 1854, and the first services were held in July 1857. The structure is built entirely of heart-of-pine from longleaf pines, set on brick piers, and features lancet-shaped windows with “palmetto frond” shutter panels. A must-see during your visit to Bluffton.
