About '25 Frozen, 1 Thawed': "From Carol Rofstad in Normal in 1975 to Dalton Mesarchik in Streator in 2003, the heartland of America still cries over unsolved murder cases that have gone as cold as ice. In his latest book, "25 Frozen, 1 Thawed," Edward R. Murrow and Emmy award winning writer Bob Cyphers tackles the 25 coldest cases in the Midwest, many of which he personally covered during his 35 year career as a journalist at KMOV-TV in St. Louis.
A 13 year old girl abducted off her bicycle; a news reporter found dead at a high school; an attorney with a bullet in his head in his office; a mother murdered while her 18 month old baby sits nearby; a teenager killed and her policeman father is the suspect; a dead man with a note full of riddle's in his pocket; 6 bodies found on a farmhouse 150 years cold; a skull found at a Mexican restaurant; a family wonders which one of them is a killer; a Halloween night killing where the suspects all fled; a man disappeared in a blizzard....and then the snow melted.
Cyphers brings back to life 25 such cold cases, hoping someday, someway, someone remembers something, and a cold case is thawed. It has happened before.
Seven National Supermarket employees in St. Louis were forced to lay on the floor while two gunman sprayed bullets on their heads.....twice. Incredibly, one of them survived. Along with a legendary St. louis police officer, the two men tell their story of the night of terror, followed by a dogged police investigation that eventually solved a case that appeared to go cold.
"25 Frozen, 1 Thawed," will be available in September 2025, published by Genius Book Publishing. Cyphers released "Dead End: Inside the Hunt for the I-70 Serial Killer" in 2024, after he spent a year traveling the country with police departments attempting to track down one of America's oldest serial killers. He has also authored three Christian faith books, and has another two more true crime books scheduled for release in 2026."
About the author: "Bob Cyphers is an Edward R. Murrow and Emmy-award-winning journalist. He has spent the past 40 plus years chasing some of America's biggest news stories. He has worked in newspaper, radio and television, small markets, medium and large. For the past 35 years, he served as a Senior News Editor at KMOV-TV in St. Louis. In 1992, a serial killer known as the "I-70 Serial Killer" murdered six people along Interstate 70, a major east-west highway through the Midwest. In 2021, a task force formed to take one final crack at solving the crimes. Law enforcement officers chose Bob to follow them in the hunt for the killer. His work chasing the I-70 serial killer resulted in an Edward R. Murrow award, among the most prestigious in journalism. His most recent book, "25 Frozen, 1 Thawed" was just released this month. It profiles cold cases in Illinois and Missouri, including the 1975 murder of Carol Rofstad at Illinois State University. Bob and his wife Alison have retired to Normal where Bob continues to write, and they chase around their grandchildren."
