2025 Delta Academy, Delta GEMS & Emerging GEMS Orientation

The Hartford Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. invites girls ages 8-18 who reside in the Greater Hartford area to participate in the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, Dr. Jeanne L. Noble GEMS Institute and Emerging GEMS programs. These youth initiatives enhance scholarship in math, science, and technology. The primary goal is to prepare young girls for full participation as leaders in the 21st Century.

The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy (ages 11-14) was created out of an urgent sense that bold action was needed to save our young females ages 11‐14 from the perils of academic failure, low self-esteem, and crippled futures. The program’s motto is, “Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow, Preparing Young Women For the 21st Century.” Delta Academy provides an opportunity for local Delta chapters to enrich and enhance the education of our young teens by augmenting their scholarship in math, science, and technology. We provide girls with opportunities to develop through leadership, service learning, and the cultivation of their relationships. A primary goal of the program is to prepare young girls for full participation as leaders in the 21st Century.

The Dr. Jeanne L. Noble GEMS (Growing & Empowering Myself Successfully) (ages 15-18) was a natural outgrowth and expansion of the highly successful Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy. Delta GEMS was created to inspire and mentor African-American at-risk, adolescent girls ages 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the frame work for girls to actualize their dreams through five major components including Scholarship, Sisterhood, Show Me the Money, Service, and Infinitely Complete, which create a road map for college and career planning. Delta GEMS works to foster academic excellence, assist in proper goal setting and planning for high school and beyond. We hope to create compassionate, caring, and community minded young women by involving them in community service opportunities. Topics within the Delta GEMS components provide interactive lessons and activities that encourage self‐reflection and individual growth.

Emerging GEMS (ages 8-10) is a Delta Academy expansion program created by the Hartford Alumnae Chapter to encourage literary appreciation, reading comprehension and personal development for girls ages 8-10. It is our goal to improve math, science, and reading skills, while simultaneously encouraging teamwork, positive self-esteem and addressing age-appropriate social issues through books, music and other activities.
