The book documents 186 sacred sites, from internationally known
shrines, ethnic roadside chapels, hunter shrines to backyard
chapels the author searched Wisconsin to locate and document
their history, capture their beauty and to encourage the reader to
visit and experience for themselves.
Part Religious Anthropology, part pilgrimage and spiritual quest,
many of the sites visited are along roadsides, in cemeteries,
church grounds, backyards or deep in the woods and are little
noticed or appreciated by those passing by. They are the physical
manifestation of the builder?s faith, often built-in remembrance or
as an expression of gratitude for prayers answered.
Many of the sites have strong immigrant connections including
Polish roadside shrines, Belgian roadside chapels,
Luxembourgian Corpus Christi family chapels and many other
clusters of ethnic religious expression.
