Mr. Audrey Wilson is being inducted posthumously into the BPSSA Hall of Fame as a football coach and faculty member.
Mr. Audrey W. Wilson, Jr., a native of Arcadia, Florida, was born on June 25, 1945, in Houston Texas to the late Audrey, Sr. and Claretha Wilson. He developed a love for sports, particularly football, baseball, and swimming at an early age. He excelled in these sports throughout his high school years at Smith-Brown High School in Arcadia, and later at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, SC. It was his athletic nature and desire to remain physically active through sportsmanship that led him to attain a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Science with a minor in Physical Education. He embraced the philosophy that physical fitness was a key component to physical and mental acuity and overall well-being. This led to an early dream of becoming a coach, so that he could work with young people in furtherance of his ideals. Subsequent to his graduation from South Carolina State, his dream was realized when he accepted a football coaching position at Blackville-Hilda High School.
During his tenure at Blackville-Hilda, Coach Wilson was more than just a coach. In addition to his coaching duties in both football and baseball, he continued a dual role as a Physical Education instructor at Macedonia Elementary School, for the seventh and eighth grades. He was known for being tough, but he wanted to bring out the best in his students. His commitment to outstanding student achievements enabled him to affect the lives of many youth and young adults.
In 1977, Coach Wilson left Blackville to become the Head Football Coach at West Hardeeville High School, which later became Jasper County HS in Hardeeville, SC. While there, he also coached baseball and basketball, along with continuing his career as an educator teaching Physical Education. Coach Wilson was a member of The South Carolina Education Association and the National Education Association. He remained in Hardeeville until 1989.
Coach Wilson’s battle with serious health issues resulted in a shortened career and life. However, he was instrumental in impacting a significant number of young adults that ventured on to become successful athletes on the collegiate level and beyond. Coach Wilson succumbed to heart-related issues in April of 2003.
