GIRMIT: The Fields of Sadness – a powerful documentary uncovering Fiji’s hidden history of the Girmitiyas.

Based on the acclaimed book Tears in Paradise by Rajendra Prasad, the film traces the journey of over 60,000 Indian indentured labourers sent to Fiji’s cane fields between 1879 and 1920 under conditions that mirrored slavery.

Through archival records, expert voices, and the descendants’ personal stories, the film brings to life the immense suffering and resilience of the Girmitiyas.
