About the event

4000 Holes in Blackburn Lancashire- A Camera Obscura exhibition by Justin Quinell
To commemorate John Lennons 85th Birthday on the 9th October, Bristolian pinhole photographer and artist Justin Quinnell will be creating a camera obscura in Blackburn incorporating 4000 holes, a tribute to the line in the song ‘A Day in the Life’ from Beatles Sgt Peppers LP:

“I read the news today oh boy, 4000 holes in Blackburn Lancashire”

The obscura, which needs viewing from inside the building, will be up from Thursday the 9th to Saturday 11th at The Bureau, Blackburn’s leading arts centre

As well as a self-portrait of John Lennon, the obscura will also project an image using the central hole from Justins original copy of Sgt Peppers album.

Justin notes:

“The Beatles were one of my earliest memories. From the age of 4. I remember piling my brothers 45rpm Beatles singles: ‘Twist and Shout’, ‘Help’, ‘I feel fine’ etc onto the central column of the record player and watching them smash on top of each other! “
I also did a pinhole photo over 30 years ago where a pinhole camera went round and round on my copy of Sgt Peppers doing a 40 second exposure of the last extended note of ‘A Day in the Life’, the same track which features the lyrics ‘4000 holes in Blackburn Lancashire’. “

He continues:

“When I suggested this to the Bureau Arts Centre in Blackburn their enthusiasm helped to make the idea a reality. The installation is a tribute both to John Lennon as well as the town of Blackburn which is immortalised forever through this iconic song.”

As well as the installation, Justin will be doing a free talk - 'New Light Through an Old Hole' on the history of camera obscuras and pinhole photography at 5.00pm on Sunday October the 5th
