This session will explore House as a living, embodied dance form, rooted in Jazz. M.uuya will share keys from his perspective to support your innerstanding and embodiment of the movements we practice, with a strong focus on groove, musicality, and moving from the inside out. This is not about memorising steps. It is about listening, feeling, and allowing the music to move you.
Who is it for
Open to all levels. No prior House experience required. Especially suited to dancers curious about deepening musicality, rhythm, and embodied movement.
What to expect
Grounded grooves, exploratory movement, and a supportive space to connect with the music and your own expression. Wear something comfortable that allows you to move freely.
The Connection: From Jazz to House
Continuity
House dance is a continuation of the Black American tradition of social dance, where music and movement merge for self-expression.
Evolution
Just as jazz evolved from earlier forms, house dance took the rhythm, spirit, and improvisational nature of its predecessors and adapted them to the new electronic sound of house music, creating a unique, modern expression.
Roots in Jazz & Beyond
Vernacular Jazz
Modern house dance shares roots with jazz's vernacular forms like the Charleston, Lindy Hop, and Jive, emphasising solo improvisation and rhythmic footwork.
African Roots
Influences come from African dance's footwork and torso movements, as well as dances like the Patton Juba, used by enslaved Africans for communication and cultural expression.
Cultural Melting Pot
The style absorbed elements from tap, Latin dances (salsa), Capoeira, and even martial arts, creating a diverse vocabulary.
