Spring Forest Cemetary Walk

Join us for a history tour of Spring Forest Cemetery in Binghamton. Long time historian, Gerry Smith, will guide us for a 2-hour walk of gentle hills and beautiful trees in a park like setting. This cemetery is where Marie Petuh of the Naturalists’ Club found the first known Merlin nest in our area. His focus will be on the history that includes a memorial to the young women who died in the 1913 clothing factory fire downtown. Many of the streets of Binghamton were named after those who are buried in this cemetery.

There will be lots of walking, including three hilly areas. Gerry wears a device to amplify his voice. Naturalists in the club will add bits of natural history when appropriate.

In 2016, Colleen Wolpert represented the Naturalists’ Club by attending a Sierra Club Executive Committee meeting to appeal for their help with saving the Hemlocks of Spring Forest Cemetery. Both Clubs were very supportive of saving these trees as well as others in our area.
