Thursday, October 2nd, we will be celebrating yet another Art House staff member's birthday (that's like, four within a month!) at Art House Cinema and Pub with a special screening of a film of their choosing! This time, our Creative Director, Brian Oestreich, is another year older, and he's inviting you to a viewing of one of his favorite indie films, that being, Todd Solondz's terrific 1995 coming-of-age comedy, WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE!
Full of Solondz's trademark angst and painfully real awkwardness, WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE is an incredibly well made and achingly resonant narrative on the complicated personal troubles and discontentment of romance, intimacy, and affection in one's adolescent years. Equally strange, funny, moving, and real, this cult indie classic is a truly unique journey back in time to the torrential world of suburban teenage hell, and we think Brian (once again) knocked it out of the park with this year's birthday film!
Middle school student Dawn Weiner is a frustrated girl who is constantly teased and degraded both at school and at home. Her nerdy older brother and perky younger sister both have their own groups and goals, making her feel like she can't find a place to belong. Dawn has an obsessive and problematic crush on Steve, an attractive high school musician, but she can only seem to get the attention of a bully named Brandon who shows affection by making aggressive threats.
