Kirks’ Grocery and Art House Cinema and Pub are proud to present a new exhibition at Art House Cinema and Pub, Larry Bean Photography. Larry Bean is a fine art black and white photographer and landscape architect living in Billings, Montana. Larry is in awe of the elegance of black and white photography. He has studied the history of compositional principles that most influenced early photography. As a landscape architect, he sees these compositional beginnings of photography within the design principles used in architecture and garden design dating back thousands of years.
Larry’s photography also reflects his study of the early masters of photography including Alfred Steiglitz, Paul Strand, Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, and Ansel Adams. His work most strongly reflects the concept of Notan, a compositional technique that translates from Japanese as light/dark harmony. In Notan, the aesthetics of the abstract structure of photography are assessed based on feelings of Chi (energy), Yin and Yang (balance) and Ma (essence and absence). Larry utilizes Notan to infuse his photography with feeling and emotion.
This exhibition is open to the public at Art House Cinema & Pub, 109 N. 30th Street, Billings, MT 59101. The Art House is open Monday – Friday from 4pm – 10pm, Saturday from 12pm – 10pm, and Sunday from 12pm – 8pm.
