Join Nawal Motawi at Artworks during her retrospective exhibition for an evening of art, music, and conversation. Nawal will give a special presentation about her 30-year journey in tile-making—from her early experiments to the nationally recognized studio Motawi Tileworks is today.
Guests will also enjoy live jazz and refreshments, and there will be plenty of time for Q&A, so bring your questions!
Artist Statement:
My unique talent is the ability to see a design for a tile within another image and bring that design into gorgeous reality. Motawi tiles have a distinctive look—confident, balanced, and dramatic, with a sophisticated play of contrast and space. That voice shines through even in our licensed collections inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and Charley Harper.
Ceramics is a marvelous blend of art and science. It requires both technical precision and an embrace of the natural effects of heat and hand. Making a one-of-a-kind ceramic is relatively easy; the real challenge—and my great love—is creating a piece that can be made beautifully, day after day. That is true craftsmanship.
Each beholder finds their own meaning in these tiles. For me, the greatest satisfaction comes from connecting people with beauty they can live with every day, and with the spark that only a piece of real, handmade art can give.
