We invite you to explore subtle yet powerful sacred breathing practices called kriyas with yoga teacher Alison Howard-Jones and discover how they can benefit your overall wellbeing.
In a comfortable seated position, you will be gently guided through a completely rounded series of exercises that include many aspects of yoga, which is in itself a fully embodied practice. By carefully following the instructions, you can experience subtle and profound effects on body, mind and emotions, and over time this can be a rich source of ‘opening up’. As the event unfolds, you will learn the name, purpose and meaning of each kriya and come to know a unique practice that you will be able to use again.
Hatha yoga has six types of kriya, otherwise known as ‘cleansing actions’. This particular set includes two types and is an ancient, authentic practice with a direct lineage: Swami Sivananda Paramahamsa of Kerala, scholar and yogi Dr P Pillai, and Duncan Hulin (director of the Devon School of Yoga, who has kindly given permission for Alison to share the practices now). Dr Pillai compiled them in a specific way to work through the physical, subtle and causal bodies, leading us back to source and purifying all levels of being.
Your wellbeing is important to us, so we invite you to be gentle, compassionate and kind towards yourself during practice. Kriyas may help people with asthma and breathing conditions, provided that they are not uncomfortable to do. However, please do not attend this workshop while you have a cold, a heart condition, low blood pressure or glaucoma, or if you are pregnant. It is also best to avoid the practices if you have had recent abdominal surgery or other abdominal problems.
It will be ideal if you can be in front of your screen in a comfortable seated position that allows you to have an upright spine, but a comfortable chair would also be fine. This event is accessible and may appeal to people who don’t or can’t do yoga postures, although use of your hand will be needed.
We hope you will enjoy learning and exploring these practices, whatever your current level of flexibility.
Tickets £10 which includes a recording of the live event.
