Where do we come from — and how did life begin?
Join Al Falster, experimental chemist and researcher at the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum, for a fascinating lecture exploring the origin of life in the universe.
In this engaging talk, Al will examine the cosmic and planetary conditions required for life to emerge, from the influence of a central star to a planet’s mass, placement, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. He will introduce the chemistry of life, highlighting the formation of organic compounds before life itself appeared, and provide a historical primer on both inorganic and organic chemistry. The program also considers the statistical probability of life forming, surviving, and evolving across the universe.
With Al’s expertise in mineralogy and chemistry, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of how Earth’s unique conditions made life possible — and what that means for the search for life beyond our planet.
This program is free and open to learners curious about science, chemistry, and the big questions of existence.
