Join us for a hands-on workshop where you'll explore the beautiful and practical Japanese art of Sashiko and Boro stitching. In this two-hour session, you'll learn various hand-stitching techniques to create decorative repairs and add unique accents to your textiles.
Whether you're looking to mend a beloved garment or simply want to try a new craft, this workshop is perfect for all skill levels.
You will learn to create samples of different sashiko stitches and how to use these stitches for decorative repairs on torn garments or fabric.
You're encouraged to bring your own items from home that may need repair (e.g., jeans with small tears, old shirts, etc.) and a pair of small embroidery scissors (if you have them).
We will provide sample pieces, needles, and thread.
There will be two chances to attend this workshop! Choose the session that works for you:
Saturday, September 13th from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Wednesday, September 17th from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
We can't wait to stitch with you!
"The term Boro is derived from the Japanese term "boroboro" , meaning something tattered or repaired. Boro typically refers to cotton, linen, and hemp materials, mostly hand-woven by peasant farmers, that have been stitched or re-woven together to create an often many-layered fabric used for warm, practical clothing.
Stitching and weaving are the two main techniques used in the creation of Boro textiles. When mending a destroyed garment or creating whole cloth from small, scrappy pieces, a simple running stitch called sashiko, translated to “ little stabs ”, is used. Today, stitchers across the world utilize sashiko as a mindful and intentional practice within their creative efforts."
