Lessons and Carols

The idea of Christmas Carols is of at least Medieval antiquity, with some of them dating to the twelfth or thirteenth Centuries, but the idea of ordinary people (instead of trained choirs) is rather later. Many Christians today don't realize that the whole idea of congregational singing is relatively recent, being largely popularized by anabaptists in the 17th and 18th Centuries. The idea was introduced into the Anglican tradition by the Wesley brothers, both Anglican priests and active promoters of the Methodist practice within the Anglican Church. The formalization of a service of 9 Lessons and Carols began in the 1880s in England and spread rapidly through Anglican churches in England and in the British colonial sphere, including Canada, the U. S. and Australia.
We at Christ Chapel have held a "Lessons and Carols" service every year since our founding, and will do so this year. On Sunday, the 28th of December, at TEN O'CLOCK a.m. Note: THERE WILLL BE NO 8:30 OR 10:30 SERVICE THAT DAY. One service of Lessons and Carols, at Ten a.m. Won't you join us?
