DEI Training- Characteristics of Culture- Module 2: Bias by Us
Through early socialization, the people around us fill in “value gaps” by subtly or overtly communicating about the kinds of people who are safe, knowledgeable, capable, trustworthy, and so on. This process creates partiality (or bias) in everyone: An inclination or predisposition for or against something/someone. This course explores where bias comes from, how it manifests in our day-to-day cognition, and why it is important to address this as cultural and communcal beings.
Learning Outcomes:
•Describe how brain anatomy, exposure, and socialization generate bias.
•Contrast System 1 and System 2 thinking.
•Explain the role of heuristics in decision-making.
•Discover automatic group preferences through the IAT.
•We'll look at other pervasive ways society creates and reenforces bias.
•Identify strategies to reduce or mitigate bias.
*We will complete an F6 and return to DPSST for 3 hours of Equity training hours
