This workshop is designed for ADIs and PDIs just like you who want to deliver consistently strong, Grade A client-centred lessons that go beyond test preparation and develop safe drivers for life.
You may also be approaching a Part 3 or Standards check and want to ensure your training is delivering the 17 competences consistently i na client-centred way.
The focus is on how real learning happens in lessons, not just what is taught, but how pupils think, decide, feel, and behave behind the wheel. The session breaks down the 17 DVSA competencies into practical, usable behaviours you can see and hear in real lessons that examiners are looking for.
You’ll explore how to structure lessons so they stay flexible, purposeful, and adapted to the pupil in front of you. A strong emphasis is placed on knowing when to teach, when to mentor, and when to coach, and how switching between these roles at the right time supports learning, safety, and independence.
The workshop challenges over-reliance on fault-finding and instruction, showing how coaching conversations, purposeful questions, and effective feedback help pupils understand risk, manage emotions, and take responsibility for their driving decisions. Throughout the day, real lesson examples, group discussions, and practical exercises link theory directly to what happens in the car.
By the end of the workshop, you will leave with a clearer structure for delivering client-centred lessons that meet DVSA expectations while genuinely changing driver behaviour.
What you will take away
1) A clear understanding of what a Grade 'A' client-centred lesson actually looks and sounds like in practice, not just on a Standards Check report.
2) A simple, adaptable lesson structure that keeps learning on track while allowing you to respond to pupil progress, behaviour, and emotional state.
3) Confidence in knowing when to teach, when to mentor, and when to coach, and how switching roles at the right time improves learning and safety.
4) Practical coaching questions that develop thinking, risk awareness, and reflection, rather than just checking knowledge or managing the moment.
5) A clearer approach to feedback that moves beyond fault-finding and helps pupils understand why things happened and what to do differently next time.
6) Better tools for managing pupil behaviour, emotions, and decision-making, including anxiety, overconfidence, rushing, and hesitation.
7) A stronger grasp of how client-centred learning aligns with the 17 DVSA competencies and what examiners are actually looking for.
8) Greater confidence in helping pupils take ownership of their learning and driving, both during lessons and after they pass their test.
