Are you looking for intelligent conversation about great books? Join us this fall for our seminar series on journeys. We meet Monday evenings in September, October, and November to discuss the great epics of Homer and Virgil, The Odyssey and The Aeneid. The format of the seminars is simple: read the assigned section of the book before you arrive and come up with a short question about the reading. Registration links and reading schedules are below.
Everyone is welcome to join us. You needn’t have studied classics in college or gone to college at all. These ancient epics are part of our heritage and accessible to everyone willing to attend to them.
Read any translation you like. We recommend reading a line-by-line verse translation, such as the translations by Herbert Jordan and Emily Wilson. The line numbers in the Fagles translation differ significantly from others.
Reading schedule:
September 8th, 5-6:30 – Books I-IV
September 15th, 5-6:30 – Books V-IX
September 22nd, 5-6:30 – Books X-XIII
September 29th, 5-6:30 – Books XIV-XVIII
October 6th, 5-6:30 – Books XIX-XXIV
The cost of the seminar is sliding scale: $0-$200.
