All Souls Church Belfast
5 Elmwood Avenue, Belfast, United Kingdom
This public meeting has been organised jointly by the Northern Ireland Interfaith Forum in association with All Souls’ Church in order to provide background information on the current discussions about changes to the way in which Religious Education (RE) is taught in Northern Ireland’s schools. The Supreme Court Judgement stated that the current Core Syllabus for RE was not compliant with the European Convention on Human Rights and that the syllabus “does not provide for religious education in an objective, critical and pluralist manner”. The Department of Education for Northern Ireland has now issued plans for a new Core Syllabus and related matters in response to that Judgement: https://www.education-ni.gov.uk/news/givan-responds-judgment-religious-education-and-collective-worship-schools.
We are particularly concerned to welcome to this discussion people from a wide range of religion and belief backgrounds and perspectives whose views may not normally be taken into consideration when such curriculum planning is taking place. We hope that those involved in education – as teachers of various age groups, teacher educators, parents, governors and others – will also find this a useful opportunity to share perspectives.
This event is grant aided by Belfast City Council. The views expressed are not necessarily shared or endorsed by the Council. The Council does not accept any responsibility or liability for same.
