About the event

‘Built to Last’: Lecture 4 - Industrial Heritage: Tales of Mixed Fortunes
A talk focusing on industrial sites across Northern Ireland in particular Sintons Mill, Gilford Mill and the Titanic Pump House.

About this Event

Dr Andrew McClelland, former Heritage at Risk Officer at UAHS, will talk about the changing values attributed to industrial heritage in Northern Ireland. He will use the case of Sinton’s Mill - a former flax spinning mill in Tandragee dating from the 1860s - to consider the challenges arising from their decline and the hopes for their future. Sebastian Graham, UAH Heritage Projects Officer, will highlight two challenging industrial buildings with contrasting fortunes – both featured in Built to Last. The vast Gilford Mill near Banbridge closed in 1986 and still awaits a sustainable future. The Pump House in the Titanic Quarter, Belfast, has taken on a new lease of life as a whiskey distillery retaining the industrial feel of the building. • Tickets are available via Eventbrite from the UAHS website and should be purchased in advance. Members: £12 Non-Members: £15 Students: £6 • Wine/Soft Drinks and light refreshments (included in ticket price) will be served from 6.30 pm. Lecture starts promptly at 7 pm. • Copies of Built to Last will be available to purchase on the night. • Venue: Old Museum Building, 7 College Square North, Belfast BT1 6AR Please note that due to the historic nature of The Old Museum Building, access is via a flight of stone steps. We regret that it is currently unsuitable for wheelchair use
