Author Talk: Writing as a Second Act

Join authors and former attorneys Kristin Koval and Kerry Nichols for a compelling conversation about their books, Penitence and Puppy Brain. Penitence is a Barnes & Noble Discover Pick and a People Magazine Book of the Week, while Puppy Brain is a USA Today national bestseller. Though very different on the surface—one a novel about finding forgiveness after an unexpected M**der, the other a groundbreaking exploration of how a dog’s brain works—their books share a surprising emotional throughline. Kristin and Kerry will also talk about their journeys from law to literature, the idea of second acts, and the unexpected turns that shape a life.

Kristin is a former lawyer who always wanted to be a writer but initially wandered down other paths. Her debut novel, PENITENCE, is a Barnes & Noble Discover Pick, a Book of the Month Pick, an Indie Next Pick, an Apple Books Staff Pick, an Apple Audiobooks Must Listen, a People Magazine Book of the Week, and a Goodreads Most Anticipated Pick and Hottest Debut Selection. She splits her time between Boulder, Colorado and Park City, Utah, with her husband, two sons, and two Great Danes.

About Kerry Nichols:

Kerry is a former attorney turned canine educator and advocate whose journey into the world of dogs began nearly fifteen years ago. With the founding of Nicholberry Goldens, she devoted herself to raising the healthiest Golden Retrievers possible. This evolved into a mission to instill emotional resilience and agency into her puppies, a pursuit she now shares with hundreds of thousands of followers across social media. Her methods continue to garner support from leading veterinarians, trainers, and psychologists.
