Young Dickens and how he came to invent Christmas

In the Fitzwilliams Centre next to the church. A talk by Ian Porter

Young Charles Dickens, although famous, needed to make some money. He wrote "A Christmas Carol", a money-spinner for him, which influences us today as to how we celebrate Christmas. We will learn of the influences on Dickens, how Christmas was celebrated before "A Christmas Carol" and how Dickens' story continues to impact on Christmas today.

Ian Porter is a London walks guide, a novelist, a historian and a public speaker. He is particularly interested in Victorian and Edwardian times as well as the Great War.
