Poetry Open Mic Night!

Join us for a free Open Mic organised by Kate Davis and compered by local poet Caleb Staps, as we round off this year’s series of Kate’s poetry workshops at Signal (with more to look forward to next year!).

A relaxed and welcoming evening of poetry and spoken word—whether you’re a seasoned performer, trying it for the first time, or haven’t been to Kate’s workshops at all. Come along, share your words, or simply listen and enjoy. All are welcome!

Here’s how it works:

• This ticket is just for attending.
• If you’d like to perform, you can pop your name down for a slot when you arrive (around 5 mins each).
• Booking a ticket really helps us plan, but you’re welcome to drop in on the night too.

Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30 start.

About our Compere - Caleb Staps:

The Bard of Barrow’ Caleb Staps (he/him) is a poet, writer, and workshop facilitator whose work explores growing up, youth, and modern life in a small town where not much seems to happen.

After returning home from Manchester with hopes of bringing a slice of spoken word home, Caleb has performed, organised, and hosted various nights locally, as well as being featured on BBC Radio Cumbria with his festive poem ‘Grandad’s Ties’. Most recently, he’s been hosting nights in aid of Mind in Furness, which have raised over £1,000 in the past year. Earlier this year, he had the pleasure of supporting Mike Garry & The Cassia String Quartet at Barrow Town Hall.

A Welcoming Space for Everyone:

Our aim for this Signal Open Mic event is to foster an inclusive, encouraging space for poets and spoken word performers of all experience levels and backgrounds to share and listen. We encourage experimentation and the pushing of boundaries, but hate speech or material offensive to others because of a protected characteristic (as set out in Equalities Act 2010) is not acceptable.
