Come along to our apple and pear event to celebrate all things fruity!
It’s been such a special* year for fruit trees, we couldn’t pass at the chance to hold our apple and pear celebration again this year.
There will be a range of fruity fun for you to get involved with:
🍏 Apple and pear juicing – We’ll have some fruit to get us started but bring apples/pears if you have them and, together, we’ll make fresh juice to drink on the day. Please bring a small bottle in case there’s any juice left over to take home too.
🍏 Orchard care talk (11am) - Hear from our local orchard expert, Daniella Levene from the Orchard Project and Barnet Community Harvesters, about how to care for and get the best out of your fruit trees. She will also be available for all your orcharding questions and to try and ID (with no guarantee) apples you have growing at home (see info below on what to bring).
🍏 Fruit donation drop off point – We’ll save some of the best fruit to donate to our local food banks.
🍏 Apple and pear tasters - Sample a range of British apple and pear varieties (until stock lasts). You might find a new favourite you want to grow at home!
🍏 Competitions – Think you’ve got the biggest apple in Barnet – bring it along! Plus, enter our longest apple peel competition (apples provided, children must be supervised). Prizes for the winner of each competition will be awarded on the day (noon).
🍏 Demonstrations – See how to make apple cider vinegar and save seeds from a range of veg plants.
🍏 Free space pips – We have a limited amount of ‘Flower of Kent’ apple pips to give away, descended from Isaac Newton's famous apple tree. Come along to find out more about this special fruit tree and why they are called space pips!
🍏 Kids activities – Various crafts for kids including a garden scavenger hunt, apple printing and nature mobile making.
🍏 Refreshments – A range of fruity based snacks and cold drinks will be available.
* = most fruit trees have loved the wet winter and warm summer but they have also struggled with many months of dry weather. Fruit has often been bountiful but has generally fallen or been ready to pick earlier than usual.
Bringing apples for Daniella to try and ID?
🍎 Please bring three unblemished apples that are representative of the rest of the apples on the tree, and not from the end of a cluster/branch
🍎 Optional – also bring a twig with a few undamaged leaves from the tree
🍎 Rough date when ripe apples usually start falling off the tree
🍎 Idea of when the tree would have been planted, often the age of the house
We hope to see you there!
