Leah & Chloe of Rising Appalachia return to Hawk & Hawthorne during the October crescent moon for an annual evening of local lore, folk music and autumnal celebration.
This year, we will be hosting an evening candlelit concert in the barn, and an early afternoon vocal masterclass in song with Leah and Chloe. Enjoy a fresh harvest feast, plus a permaculture tour of Hawk & Hawthorne in-between events.
Leah Song & Chloe Smith bring a soulful blend of traditional Appalachian ballads, banjo, fiddle, bodhran and original compositions, plus crowd favorites from their global Rising Appalachia catalogue. The evening invites a deep listening experience rooted in folk tradition and improvisational spirit.

Global Sound & Movement
Leah & Chloe's vocal workshops explore sound vibration and body movement as tools for self-awareness and sound. The space is created to help each participant to embody the physical art of making sound from all the many resonators in the body.
This workshop utilizes the expressions through movement and music using a variety of techniques including vocal contact improv, creative sound improvisations, group harmonics, singing techniques and movement (drawing upon yoga, contact improv, martial arts, and modern dance).
Come join our growing Folk Choir and learn to create your own sound palate.

Rising Appalachia
Rising Appalachia is an internationally touring folk ensemble steeped in the soul of the South. It is the brainchild of Atlanta-raised sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith, rooted in the rich musical traditions of their family and their journey into song as performers, writers, and song catchers. They have that touch that only siblings can have.
Rising Appalachia makes music as a reflection of their times, blending Americana music with lyrics, rhythm and poetry of our times. The band's unique sound was shaped by Leah and Chloe's soulful vocals, simple instrumentation, and seamless harmonies, unique to siblings steeped in the multi-generational music of the South. They are joined by a host of incredible musicians who bring their own cultural influences, enriching the blend of Appalachian, Irish, Americana, Latin and world roots music that defines the smooth sound of Rising Appalachia.
Fronted by Leah and Chloe, and featuring full-time members David Brown (upright bass, baritone guitar), Duncan Wickel (fiddle, cello), and Biko Casini (drums and percussion), expect to be swooned into a tapestry of silky sounds.
Their journey has taken them around the world, from sailboat tours across British Columbia to street theater festivals in Southern Italy, a full-time busking career in New Orleans, and traditional song studies in Ireland, Bulgaria, Latin America, and beyond.
Michael Numinous
Michael is a visionary land steward, bardic poet, and community weaver rooted in the Blue Ridge Mountains just north of Asheville. His current project, Hawk & Hawthorne, is a regenerative farm, event venue, and creative sanctuary. His work braids together myth, ecology, entrepreneurship and community -- inviting others to participate in creating the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.
Chris Sharpe
Chris Sharpe has been a seasoned chef in the Asheville area and beyond for the past fifteen years. Chris first learned to cook in the woods. At a young age on backpacking trips, Chris took the role of cook in the camp, learning to cook simple foods with limited ingredients. Moving forward he served as a vegan chef, running the business Eden Out, a farm-to-table vegan delivery service and at the same time managing the farm providing the foods known as Gnome Town. During this experience Chris prioritized creating meals from all over the world in a global vegan fusion cuisine integrating as much local ingredients as possible with the intention of celebrating the diversity of cuisine in the world. Highly influenced by the works of Masanobu Fukuoka, Chris has always sought to integrate a regionally specific cuisine seeking out the ingredients that grow without effort in whatever region he finds himself in. Chris currently manages relief kitchens across America, going into disaster zones or barren landscapes, feeding people in need.
