Join us for Patchwork Voices, a hands-on creative workshop inviting Newham residents to design and make individual story tiles using symbols, patterns, and collage. Each tile reflects a personal experience, identity, or belief—and together, they form a vibrant community mosaic celebrating the borough’s diverse voices.
Inspired by visionary East Ham artist Madge Gill (1882–1961), whose intricate ink drawings and stitched textiles explored spirituality, ritual, and self-expression, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore visual storytelling through repetition and pattern.
What to expect:
Gill’s legacy is central to this event: Newham holds the world’s largest collection of her work—over 1,200 pieces donated by her son in 1963. Her art, guided by her spirit muse “Myrninerest,” remains internationally celebrated and deeply rooted in the local landscape.
No experience necessary – all materials provided.
Come share your story, connect with others, and contribute to a collective artwork that honours Newham’s rich heritage and creative spirit.
