The Cascades Trail Run returns to the heart of Pietermaritzburg, offering runners a unique trail experience on a purpose-built trail network right on the city’s doorstep. This much-loved venue blends flowing single-track, lush forests, and plantation trails into a route that feels wild and immersive — yet is only minutes from urban comforts.
Set among gum and pine plantations, indigenous forest pockets, and even sections of bamboo, the trails deliver constant variety and beautiful views over the city below. The area is rich in biodiversity, with towering lemonwood and yellowwood trees, regular sightings of bushbuck, and abundant birdlife — and if you’re really lucky, you might even spot the majestic crowned eagle overhead.
Longer routes head out along the Ferncliffe ridgeline before turning back toward the city on fast, flowing trails, giving runners a true trail running experience in a compact, accessible setting. Whether you’re lining up for the 18km, enjoying the 10km, or bringing friends and family along for the 5km, Cascades offers something for everyone — from dedicated trail runners to first-timers.
