"Mike McCarthy's journey began as a Division III student-athlete before walking on at CSU Bakersfield, where he became a Division | All-American and was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2011. He went on to play and coach professionally for 15 years, all while earning his MBA and helping lead an international non-profit. Taking baseball-inspired volunteer trips to orphanages in Kenya, Honduras, Mexico, and beyond. From Little League to the Major Leagues, his story reflects the value of balancing academics, athletics, and giving back that he learned through a holistic experience on and off the the field.
He credits much of that balance to nearly a decade in Bakersfield, where he not only grew as an athlete at CSUB but also in the classroom and the community.
Today, he reminds families that while the odds of reaching the highest level of any discipline are slim, the skills learned through a holistic student-athlete experience can create far greater opportunities in life. In a time when early specialization, pay-to-play programs, and personal branding dominate youth sports, Mike advocates for developing the whole person - not just the athlete.”
